Keynote lecture: Plastic and microplastic Pollution of the Ocean and Waters: A European and International Perspective

Future of Plastic (R)evolution

Plastic and microplastic pollution has become one of the most pervasive pressures affecting oceans and inland waters worldwide. This keynote will review how marine litter science has evolved from the first observations of visible debris and biological impacts to today’s focus on microplastics, nanoplastics, sources, transport, fate, ecological risks and human-health concerns. Particular attention will be given to the European experience, where the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the Single-Use Plastics Directive, the Zero Pollution Action Plan and the Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” have helped connect research, monitoring and policy. At the international level, growing cooperation through the United Nations, Regional Seas Conventions, the G7 and G20, and initiatives toward a global plastics treaty highlight the need for harmonization. Future progress will depend on new approaches, global monitoring, FAIR data, new indicators, artificial intelligence and stronger integration between science, policy and society to assess trends, measure the effectiveness of actions and support prevention.
